Numbing Creams Guide
While most clients find electrolysis very tolerable, topical numbing cream can make your experience even more comfortable — especially for sensitive areas.
How to Apply Numbing Cream
Choose Your Cream
Use a topical numbing cream containing lidocaine (4-5%). Available over-the-counter at most pharmacies.
Clean the Area
Wash the treatment area with mild soap and water. Pat dry completely before applying the cream.
Apply Generously
Apply a thick layer of numbing cream to the treatment area. Cover the entire area you expect to be treated.
Cover with Wrap
Cover the cream with plastic wrap (cling film) to help the numbing agent absorb more effectively.
Wait 30-60 Minutes
Apply the cream 30-60 minutes before your appointment time. Set a timer so you don't forget.
Remove Before Treatment
Remove the plastic wrap and gently wipe off the cream before your session begins. Your electrologist will clean the area.
What to Look For
The most effective over-the-counter numbing creams contain lidocaine at a concentration of 4-5%. Look for products marketed for skin numbing or tattoo preparation.
Popular options available at Canadian pharmacies include:
EMLA Cream (prescription)
Contains lidocaine + prilocaine. Highly effective. Ask your doctor.
Lidocaine 5% cream (OTC)
Available at most pharmacies without a prescription. Look for 'maximum strength' formulations.
Zensa Numbing Cream
A popular choice specifically formulated for skin procedures. Contains 5% lidocaine.
