What Is Electrolysis? The Complete Guide to Permanent Hair Removal

·By Tammy Morse, RE, CPE

Electrolysis is the only method of hair removal that has been classified by the FDA as truly permanent. Unlike laser hair removal (which is classified as "permanent hair reduction"), electrolysis permanently destroys the hair follicle's ability to produce new hair.

How Electrolysis Works

During an electrolysis session, a certified electrologist inserts a fine, sterile probe into each individual hair follicle. A small amount of electrical energy — either heat (thermolysis), chemical (galvanic), or a combination of both (blend) — is delivered to the base of the follicle, destroying its ability to regenerate hair.

The treated follicle will never produce hair again. However, because hair grows in cycles and not all follicles are active at the same time, multiple sessions are needed to treat all the hair in a given area.

The Three Modalities

Thermolysis (Short-wave):

Uses high-frequency alternating current to generate heat in the follicle. This is the fastest method and is ideal for treating large areas.

Galvanic:

Uses direct current to create a chemical reaction (sodium hydroxide) that destroys the follicle. This method is slower but extremely effective for stubborn or distorted follicles.

Blend:

Combines both thermolysis and galvanic methods for maximum effectiveness. This is often used for difficult hairs that have been previously treated with other methods.

What to Expect

Your first visit always begins with a free consultation. During this time, your electrologist will examine the treatment area, discuss your goals, and create a personalized treatment plan.

Treatment sessions typically follow three phases:

  1. **Cleaning Phase** — Initial treatments clear visible hair from the area
  2. **Control Phase** — As regrowth slows, sessions become less frequent
  3. **Maintenance Phase** — Occasional sessions ensure lasting results

Who Can Benefit

Electrolysis works for everyone — regardless of skin tone, hair color, or hair type. This is a key advantage over laser hair removal, which is most effective on dark hair and light skin.

Common reasons people choose electrolysis include:

  • Permanent facial hair removal
  • PCOS-related hair growth
  • Gender-affirming hair removal
  • Ingrown hair prevention
  • Skin tag and spider vein removal (advanced electrolysis)

Is It Safe?

Electrolysis has been safely practiced for over 145 years. When performed by a trained, certified electrologist using sterile single-use probes, it is extremely safe with minimal side effects. Temporary redness and mild swelling are common and resolve quickly.
