Preparing for Your First Electrolysis Appointment: What to Expect

·By Tammy Morse, RE, CPE

Your first electrolysis appointment is an important step toward permanent hair removal. Here's what to expect so you can feel confident and prepared.

Before Your Appointment

Let hair grow:

Allow 2-3 days of growth in the treatment area. We need to see and access the hair, so don't shave, wax, or pluck before your visit.

Skip stimulants:

Avoid caffeine and alcohol on the day of your appointment. These can increase skin sensitivity.

Eat a light meal:

Low blood sugar can make you more sensitive to treatment. Have something to eat before you arrive.

Consider numbing cream:

If you're concerned about comfort, apply a topical numbing cream 30-60 minutes before your appointment.

The Consultation

Every new client starts with a free 15-30 minute consultation. During this time, your electrologist will:

  • Discuss your hair removal goals
  • Examine the treatment area
  • Explain how electrolysis works
  • Answer all your questions
  • Provide a treatment timeline estimate
  • Offer a brief test treatment if desired

There is absolutely no pressure to proceed with treatment — the consultation is purely informational.

During Treatment

You'll be comfortably reclined in a private treatment room. Your electrologist will use a magnifying lamp to see each hair clearly, then insert a tiny sterile probe into the follicle and deliver a brief pulse of energy.

Most clients describe the sensation as a brief, warm pinch. It's very tolerable for most people, and we can adjust our technique for your comfort level.

After Treatment

You may notice mild redness around the treated follicles — this is completely normal and usually fades within a few hours. Your electrologist will provide aftercare instructions to ensure optimal healing.
