Why Hormonal Facial Hair Removal Should Be Considered Gender-Affirming Care

When a cisgender woman develops thick facial hair due to PCOS, her insurance company calls the removal "cosmetic." When a transgender woman seeks the same treatment, it may be covered as "gender-affirming care." The hair is the same. The distress is the same. The double standard needs to change.

The Impact of Unwanted Facial Hair

For anyone experiencing unwanted facial hair, whether due to hormonal conditions, menopause, or gender identity, the emotional impact is profound:

  • Daily time spent hiding or removing hair
  • Social withdrawal and avoidance of intimacy
  • Anxiety, depression, and shame
  • Reduced quality of life

These impacts don't discriminate based on the cause of the hair growth.

Redefining "Cosmetic"

The label "cosmetic" implies that the treatment is optional and purely for appearance. But for millions of women with hormonal conditions, and for transgender individuals, facial hair removal is about mental health, quality of life, and being able to face the world with confidence. That's healthcare.

What Needs to Change

We advocate for:

  • Extended health benefit plans recognising electrolysis for hormonal conditions as a medical expense
  • CRA acceptance of electrolysis as a legitimate medical expense for diagnosed conditions
  • Removal of gatekeeping barriers that prevent people from accessing care
  • Equal treatment regardless of the underlying cause of unwanted hair growth

Our Role

While we continue to advocate for policy changes, we provide compassionate, professional care to every client who walks through our door. Whatever your reason for seeking treatment, you'll be treated with dignity and respect.
