Electrolysis, the CRA, and Your Extended Health Benefits
Many clients are surprised to learn that their electrolysis treatments may be partially reimbursable through their employer's extended health benefits plan, or eligible as a medical expense deduction with the Canada Revenue Agency.
Extended Health Benefits
Some employer-provided health benefit plans cover electrolysis treatments. Coverage varies by plan, but it's always worth checking. Here's how:
- Review your benefits booklet or online portal
- Look under "paramedical services" or "other health practitioners"
- Contact your benefits administrator directly
- Ask if a doctor's referral is required for coverage
Even if your plan doesn't explicitly list electrolysis, some plans have a general "other medical practitioner" category that may apply.
CRA Medical Expense Tax Credit
The Canada Revenue Agency allows certain medical expenses to be claimed as tax deductions. While electrolysis for purely cosmetic purposes may not qualify, treatments for medical conditions may be eligible:
- Electrolysis for hirsutism caused by PCOS or other hormonal conditions
- Pre-operative hair removal for gender-affirming surgery
- Treatment recommended by a physician for a diagnosed condition
Keep all receipts and consider getting a referral letter from your doctor documenting the medical necessity of treatment.
